Swans Island

Swans Island information for the Healthy Water, Healthy Aging project.

Swans Island, situated close to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park, is a quick and beautiful ferry ride from the mainland. Now part of Hancock County, Swans Island is the traditional territory of the Penobscot people. Fishing is extremely important on Swans Island, with a vibrant working waterfront, a thriving fishing co-op, and their own lobster zone. Swans Island has a K-8 school on the island, with students travelling to MDI for high school. The year-round population of Swans Island sits around 355, growing to over 1,000 during the summer season.
